Lesson Recap

Relief Society and Priesthood were combined today for a 5th Sunday message.  Brother Elton spoke on "How Living the Gospel Helps You Succeed".

First, how would you answer that question?  Second, what is your definition of success?

1)  What are some things that come to mind when you think of worldly success?
  • Money, wealth, power, career, prestige, renown, celebrity, etc.
2)  What does it take to achieve worldly success?
  • Work, rush, step on toes, determination, etc.
3) Name some examples of worldly success.
  • Obama, Kardashians, Jay-Z, Oprah, Donald Trump, etc.
4) What are some things that come to mind when you think of success in the gospel?
  • Temple, tithing, peace, callings, service, faith, testimonies, etc.
5) What does it take to achieve gospel success?
  • Work, dedication, faith, etc.
6) Name some people successful in the gospel.
  • President Monson, Joseph Smith, Wilford Woodruff, the Vauses, our Elders, Jesus
Can you have both worldly success and gospel success?  Yes.  Can you have gospel success if you put worldly success first?  No.  Can you still have worldly success if you first achieve gospel success?  Yes, but not guaranteed.  In addition to spiritual blessings, gospel success also provides skills marketable in the world (think of youth learning to public speak during sacrament meeting, leadership skills gained in our various callings, etc.).

How do we achieve gospel success?  By action.  You can say you are faithful all you want but it's the actions that prove that faith.  Faith without works is dead.  Get up and get moving.

Activity Recap

Thanks to everyone who joined us last night for the Relief Society Broadcast.  We started off the evening with some group activities and root beer floats and capped off the evening with the Broadcast, albeit with some technical difficulties.  If you were not able to catch the broadcast, click here to watch it.

Dog Walker NEEDED (:

Details:
Looking for a new DOG WALKER to add to our awesome team of animal lovers. We are located in Maplewood and dog walk in Maplewood and South Orange only.

With my company, if hired, you'd be doing about 4-6, 30 minute dog walks per day from about 11am to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and paid per walk ($11-$13 per walk). The work week is M-F no exceptions, please do not reply if you can only work a few days out of the week.

Some things to consider before emailing:

Dogs are like people, they fall into routines and become comfortable with and expect the same thing everyday- more or less. Are you looking for a long term, part-time, everyday Monday to Friday job or just a part-time fill-in until you find something full-time and permanent?

I like to think of this job as the most awesome, incredible opportunity ever because I am paid to get outside, exercise and play with dogs (that's pretty rare!) but if you don't like being outside in whatever the weather has to throw at you (rain, really really bad rain, snow, extreme cold, extreme heat, sun, the most perfect days ever), if you don't like to exercise and definitely do not like dogs then this job would probably suck. Which are you?

Please answer the following questions in your email:

1. Do you have a valid NJ drivers license?
2. Do you have a reliable car for daily use?
3. Do you have a smart phone?
4. Are you available between the hours of 11am and 3pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday?
5. What are some reasons you can think of that may keep you from coming into work?

If you think you're the right fit please email me! (:

Lesson: Live According to the Words of the Prophets

Another full house in our Relief Society room yesterday!  It is so inspiring to see the seats filled.

Our lesson was based on Sister McConkie's talk in the last General Conference session entitled: Live According to the Words of the Prophets.

1) What is the importance of having a prophet?
  • We always know God's word
    • "Our Father in Heaven loves all of His children and desires that they know and understand His plan of happiness. Therefore, He calls prophets, those who have been ordained with power and authority to act in God’s name for the salvation of His children."
  • There is order for us in the confusion of the world.
    • Several sisters bore testimony of the strength they have received from the orderliness of the church's organization.
    • "We are grateful for a church “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.”7 The Lord’s house is a house of order, and we need never be deceived about where to look for answers to our questions or uncertain about which voice to follow. We need not be “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.” God reveals His word through His ordained servants, “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God.” When we choose to live according to the words of the prophets, we are on the covenant path that leads to eternal perfection."
  • The prophet's words are modern-day scripture for us to follow.
2) How can we live according to the words of the prophets?
  • First, we need to actually listen to the prophet.  Watch and pay attention during General Conference, read the Ensign, etc.  We can't know what to do if we are not seeking the prophet and his apostles out.
  • Pray before listening to the prophet so we know what we specifically need to attend to in our lives that he talks to us about.
  • "Thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;
“For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.
“For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you.”3
To be in harmony with heaven’s divine purposes, we sustain the prophet and choose to live according to his words."
  • Live your life so the spirit can constantly be attending you and guiding you.
  • Have faith.
  • Constantly study.
3) What blessings do we receive by being obedient to the words of the prophets?
  • Heartaches will be averted or eased; we will become stronger and become the best person that we can be.
  • "The Lord “will feed those who trust Him.” The words of the prophets are like manna to our souls. When we partake, we are blessed, protected, and preserved both temporally and spiritually. When we feast upon their words, we learn how to come unto Christ and live."
  • "the Holy Ghost will speak truth to our minds and hearts."
  • "When we heed the words of the prophets, we build our homes and our lives upon an eternally sure foundation, “the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, … that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to … misery and endless wo.”

Nanny

Details:
Looking for a loving, RELIABLE and experienced nanny to care for our 4 year old daughter. Between 30-40 hours per week, depending on your availability. Some morning care and afternoon care all five days per week. Requires car and valid driver's license (and good driving record). Someone who will be very engaged and active in play, creative fun and outdoor time. We really want someone who is active! Light housework, picking up, cooking (this is important), taking to activities and summer pool club, playdates once in a while, some errands occasionally, feeding our dog and taking out to relieve himself (have a dog walker for proper walks). We are hoping for someone who is outgoing and kind and patient. Someone who understands children very well and loves and nurtures them (and knows how to care for them). Please email if interested. Thank you!
