Relief Society and Priesthood were combined today for a 5th Sunday message. Brother Elton spoke on "How Living the Gospel Helps You Succeed".
First, how would you answer that question? Second, what is your definition of success?
1) What are some things that come to mind when you think of worldly success?
- Money, wealth, power, career, prestige, renown, celebrity, etc.
2) What does it take to achieve worldly success?
- Work, rush, step on toes, determination, etc.
3) Name some examples of worldly success.
- Obama, Kardashians, Jay-Z, Oprah, Donald Trump, etc.
4) What are some things that come to mind when you think of success in the gospel?
- Temple, tithing, peace, callings, service, faith, testimonies, etc.
5) What does it take to achieve gospel success?
- Work, dedication, faith, etc.
6) Name some people successful in the gospel.
- President Monson, Joseph Smith, Wilford Woodruff, the Vauses, our Elders, Jesus
Can you have both worldly success and gospel success? Yes. Can you have gospel success if you put worldly success first? No. Can you still have worldly success if you first achieve gospel success? Yes, but not guaranteed. In addition to spiritual blessings, gospel success also provides skills marketable in the world (think of youth learning to public speak during sacrament meeting, leadership skills gained in our various callings, etc.).
How do we achieve gospel success? By action. You can say you are faithful all you want but it's the actions that prove that faith. Faith without works is dead. Get up and get moving.
